Ink Institute – Taiwan’s Secret Realm – Lavender Coral

Price range: $6.00 through $35.00

Notes from the study: this ink goes down on paper as a watery blue, and dries to a moody lavender. I love this in my Pilot Custom 74 with medium nib; it’s a perfect one to take to work and feel a little subversive.

Description

The underwater lavender fields of Penghu, located near Dongjiyu, are a unique marine wonder known for their vibrant lavender-blue staghorn coral. These coral reefs lie in shallow waters no deeper than 6 meters, forming a surreal seascape where the soft purples of staghorn coral meet the lush greens of cabbage coral. The contrast in colors creates an otherworldly underwater landscape that has become a signature of Penghu’s marine beauty.

Despite their popularity among divers and snorkelers, the site is not easily reached. The coral fields are situated off the main islands and require favorable weather, sea conditions, and some experience in open-water navigation to access safely. This remoteness, however, helps preserve the reef’s pristine condition.

The ecosystem here remains rich and thriving. A wide variety of small fish species and marine life shelter among the coral branches, making the site not only visually stunning but also ecologically vibrant. More than just a beautiful location, this area is a living symbol of biodiversity, resilience, and the quiet majesty of nature found in the seas of Penghu.
