Lennon Toolbar – Winter 2025 – Peeled Chili Pepper

$6.00

Notes from the study: an unprepossessing ink to begin with, Peeled Chili Pepper knocked my socks off once I got it on the page. Maybe it’s the thought of actually simmering unripe chilis in soy sauce and the spirit of that insanity somehow rising up into an ink. It’s understated, but definitely something interesting lurking underneath. My Asvine v126 loved this ink. It’s a lovely dark green.

冬令進補4 Winter tonics in Taiwan vol.4
With global climate change intensifying, this winter arrived earlier and colder than in previous years. Various cold-weather essentials have poured into daily life—heat-tech clothing, warming pads, down jackets, beanies, gloves, and thick socks—all fully equipped to battle waves of frigid air sweeping down from the north. In such a season, a warm bowl of food becomes an undeniable source of happiness.

A freshly cooked pumpkin soup is surely the first choice; with just a pumpkin, a pinch of salt, and some milk, you can create a bowl of rich, creamy comfort. If you prefer something more traditionally Taiwanese, peeled chili pepper chicken soup is a must—soy-marinated green chilies offering sweetness with a gentle kick, pushing away the cold that has deeply seeped into your body and heart. And at this moment, why not enjoy a cup of mulled wine with friends and share the festive mood? Finally, end the night with a small bowl of taro sago, letting its sweetness accompany you into a peaceful sleep.

剝皮辣椒 Peeled Chili Pepper
Pronunciation: bo pila jiao

Once unripe chilies are marinated in rich soy sauce and simmered with chicken, they release an unexpectedly sweet and crisp flavor. Yet despite their innocent appearance, these green chilies still carry a tender heat—warming your stomach from within.

*Peeled chili pepper is a Taiwanese ingredient made by removing the skin of green chilies and marinating them in soy sauce and seasonings.
Despite being a type of chili, it is only mildly spicy and has a slightly sweet, savory flavor.
It is often used in soup dishes, most famously in “peeled chili pepper chicken soup.”
